The Best Time to Visit Park City: A Local’s Season-by-Season Guide

Fall colors on the hillsides above Deer Valley East Village homes and a winding mountain road near Park City, Utah

Most places have a good season and a bad one. Park City has four good ones, and they are four completely different trips. The mistake is not picking the wrong season. It is showing up in October expecting July, or booking Christmas week in November and wondering why everything is gone.

I was raised here and spent 25 years as a Captain with the Park City Fire District. I now manage a handful of vacation homes near Deer Valley East Village and Jordanelle. The question I get most is not “what should we do.” It is “when should we come.” Here is the answer, the way I would give it to a friend.

The cheat sheet

Season Best for Crowds Prices Weather Book by
Winter, Dec-Mar Skiing, snowboarding, sleigh rides, Main Street après, family trips Peak at Christmas, MLK, Presidents’ Day Highest Highs in the 20s-30s F, reliable snow by mid-Dec Holidays 6+ months out; other weeks 2-3 months
Spring, Apr-May Late-season skiing, quiet Main Street, budget trips, couples Lowest Lowest 40s-60s F, unpredictable Weeks, not months
Summer, Jun-Sep Hiking, biking, Jordanelle, markets, concerts, festivals High but spread out Mid, well below winter 70s-80s F days, afternoon storms possible in Jul-Aug 2-3 months for Jul-Aug
Fall, mid-Sep-Oct Aspens, empty trails, shoulder rates, Shot Ski, Halloween on Main Low, except peak color weekends Low 50s-60s F, first snow possible in Oct A few weeks; earlier for peak color

Rule of thumb: for holidays and July, book the home first and the flights second. For everything else, the reverse.

Winter: pick the mountain first, then the home

Park City has two big resorts, and first-timers treat them as interchangeable. Deer Valley is on the Ikon Pass, is skiers only and is famously groomed. Park City Mountain is bigger, welcomes snowboarders and is on the Epic Pass. Beyond the lifts there is Nordic skiing, sleigh rides to a yurt dinner, bobsled rides at Utah Olympic Park, snowmobiling and dog sledding. Planning dates? See the 2026-27 opening dates, and our guides to Park City Mountain and Deer Valley.

What locals know: buy lift tickets in advance, early December is a gamble and mid-December onward is safe, and drink more water than you think you need at 7,000 feet. Not sure what to bring? Here is our ski trip packing guide.

Spring: mud season, honestly

April and May are mud season. The lifts close and half of Main Street takes a vacation, which makes it the cheapest, quietest, most local version of the town. Do not write off April: the last weeks of ski season are a party, and Park City Mountain usually holds its Pond Skim in mid-April. Dates change with the snowpack, so plan the days, not the week, and check the forecast the night before.

Summer: the thing the resort side does not have

Jordanelle Reservoir offers paddleboard and kayak rentals at the Hailstone marina, and our homes are minutes away. Summer highlights include the Fourth of July parade on Main Street, the Deer Valley Music Festival, the Kimball Arts Festival in early August, the Park City Song Summit in late August, Miners Day on Labor Day weekend and the Park Silly Sunday Market on select Sundays (check the schedule before you go). Afternoon storms can roll in around 2 to 4 p.m. in July and August, so start hikes and rides early.

Fall: the two-week window

Peak aspen color usually lands in the last week of September or the first week of October, and the window is about two weeks. Guardsman Pass, the Alpine Loop and Mirror Lake Highway are the classic drives. Fall also brings Tour des Suds in September, then the Shot Ski, the Scarecrow Festival and Halloween on Main in October. Home rates drop after Labor Day and stay down until the lifts open.
